This is really frightening, but not surprising. The fringe on both sides gets all of the attention. This poll was horribly skewed from the very beginning in that they polled a bunch of wingnuts - not your average Republican mind you - but most likely a group of people who had "self-identified" and/or registered with some organization. It doesn't say on the methodology what organization, or how these people were picked.

Here's another thing. It was done by phone. Tone is very hard to convey online, or in print, but I am sure that I could ask this question: "Do you believe that the only way for an individual to go to heaven is though Jesus Christ, or can one make it to heaven through another faith?" in a way that would make a god-fearing fundamentalist christian that was pre-selected for this poll give me the answer that I was looking for. :)

Good article, Gabe!

Yea the whole Installous and pirated apps thing is so blown out of the water. People should not be doing this because apple will get so fed up that they will sue like Saurik(Jay Freeman) and all other developers and make them stop developing on the jailbreak. Then we will all be screwed with no jailbreak or unlocks or cydia. What fun will that be.

I feel you about the whole false advertising thing. And also why do they have to make things like internet and texting so much. If they made their services cheaper they would have more business and in turn that would increase their gross income over a certai period of time. They piss me off with that stuff. I have Tmobile and they even piss me off. But all in all if possible anyone should stick with iphone and the company they have.

I'll play devil's advocate here. Though I love Macs, and truly do believe they are worth the price-tag, I've been working for the past 8 months on a $179 refurbished EEE PC. My only gripe? The left mouse button got sticky for a few days until I got the courage (anger) up to knock the proverbial "shit" out of it.

It has had no hardware failures. Streams video nicely. I am able to do all of my coursework on it (which was the intent of purchase), and it cost less than most cell phones.

I suppose the above is in support of your statement in a way. You do get what you pay for, but only if you know what you're buying. Walking blindly into a retail store and laying down cash is likely not the best purchase plan for any bit of complex machinery. That being said, there are deals on both sides of the fence that are compelling.

Infrastructure is key. This smart phone thing is not a fad. Rich data is here to stay.

Here in a few years I think we'll see the switch from providers being in control from point of sale to termination, and instead see them as infrastructure providers, where users are able to shop around for service providers.

Google is well ahead of the game, already negotiating rates and laying line to use mobile networks and land lines interchangeably, over multiple providers, all seamless to the end user. (See also the future of Google Voice)

At the end of the day, we're talking mobile internet devices now. Not cell phones. Who cares if you're on AT&T or Verizon at the moment as long as your web pages load, apps work, and calls go through.

The sooner we reach the separation of infrastructure provider from service provider, the better off we'll all be. I want my service provider negotiating rates with their infrastructure providers to get ME the best deal they can. I want Google, or Skype, or the next fellow to enter the space, competing against each other for my business, while AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Cox, and Southwestern Bell fight for theirs.

We're close. Very close. Just need a few more nudges and this whole Cell Phone extortion thing will work itself it.
